Does what it is designed to do. Reliable and dependable, but it is not designed to be a 2" target pistol. 1000 rounds through it, no failures. To me this is like many comparable entry level guns, but I would consider it to be a good purchase. Heavy trigger that you have to squeeze, not pull, to keep it on target (Posted on 6/20/2018)
Its a nice pistol I could not hit target shot 4 rounds at 25 feet! Ithought it was me but my buddy did the same??? I do not know where the shots went yet! I will use a larger target to find out if it is high low left or right! Once I find out at least if Review by butchbee

It is a decent gun for the price. Clips are made poorly, they rattle like a baby toy when loaded with more than than 5 rounds. I probably would not buy it again. (Posted on 3/5/2018)

Man this gun looked good in the picture but instead of silver at the top it was a gray color. Still was light and felt good to handle. I could not hit a target. My brother could not hit a target and he was in the national guard. My wife however shot it pretty well. Not sure why. Maybe she picture my face on the target. The sights are not really adjustable so i could not fix it. Lots of fun to shoot the first time but if i cannot hit a target i will get bored with it really fast. (Posted on 2/19/2018)

A very nice pistol Review by BooBoo

This pistol shoots a variety of ammunition brands well, is easy to dis-assemble and re-assemble, and is a lot of pistol for a very good price. Contrast sights are easy to see and can be upgraded based on your preference. This pistol fits well in my small hands, and is easy to shoot and accurate. Trigger pull is consistent and the pistol is well built. I have had no problems or issues. I would have no problem using this pistol as a carry pistol and would recommend it for those who are budget conscience and looking for a reliable pistol with a good warranty. Seeing, shooting and handling it will make you a believer too. (Posted on 5/24/2017)

I bought one of these years ago countless rounds through it zero issues. Maybe I am not enough of a gun snob to say how trashy it is before I shoot it I just know it is as reliable now as the day it was purchased. (Posted on 3/22/2017)

When I bought this pistol the price was even lower. I had been looking at either a Glock 22 or 23 for some time. when this item came up on sale on RKGuns it really caught my eye. It is built on the Glock design, law suit already over, and I love that because tear down is so simple. The slide stop is too short making it hard to pull down and remove the slide, but that can be replaced with an after market part. The gun shoots great, and I'll be shooting it for a long time. Great Value Review by DoubleEagle4

For around $300, this is a great value (VE=Value Enhanced). I have ran around 500 rounds through mine. Only problem I had was when I ran the first 50 rounds through it. I was using American Eagle 155g FMJ. I was having 1-2 FTF in every mag and was getting concerned. After that box, I switched to 180g Winchester White Box FMJ. Have not had a single malfunction since that... I also ran about 60 165g Hydra Shoks though it with no problem at all. Not sure what was up with the American Eagle, but I will just stay away from it in this handgun.

I am happy with the accuracy as well. Even with the snappy .40 round, I am able to get it back on target fast. I really like the look and feel of it. I saw some complaints about the rattling, but I have found that it does not rattle when one is in the chamber. My only negative is that the long, heavy trigger pull takes awhile to get used to. However, with there not being an external safety on it, I feel comfortable knowing that it is going to take a good squeeze for it to go off.

Once again, for the price you really can't go wrong. You could almost buy 2 of these for the price of a Glock... (Posted on 12/29/2016)

I haven't shot mine yet so I wont down grade it but its not easy to take down. I always take a gun apart before the range to oil it and inspect it and maybe its my fingers but I can't take it down. I've seen vids on line that show how and still can't do it so I might sell it. (Posted on 8/16/2016)

GREAT GUN for the MONEY Review by Tom Homer

I read the negative review from mw, below, and took my SW.40 VE apart and measured the rails, the four rails (using an accurate machinist caliper) measured .395 in length and not the 1/4 inch he claimed? My bro and I both have this model and I can say that it has been a great weapon with absolutely no malfunctions of any kind and feels better in my hand than my Glock 23. It shoots as accurate as my Glock, also. I have had possibly a thousand rounds through it to date. It's still tight with very little play. The only negative that I can mention is the trigger pull is fairly heavy but once used to it I have no problems shooting it. As a side note, my bro also has this model in the 9mm and it has performed the same as his .40 which is the reason he bought it in the 9mm. They come with two magazines, trigger lock, in a nice plastic case. It's a plain jayne but so easy to take apart and clean (like the Glock) and great for home protection and when backpacking in the woods over night.... Dependable and accurate and the price is right and S&W backs it up. Happy trails. (Posted on 7/6/2016)

By far a great gun. Comparable to more expensive guns from different manufacturers. One of the best guns on the market and the price makes it a no-brainer. This gun performed well at the range, accuracy, feeding, and recoil were great. Disassembly is easy and made with quality parts. You can hot rod this gun up change sights, lasers well there is some options out there. You can spend the money on a Glock or save money and buy this firearm and in my opinion, I prefer the S&W. I don't know how someone can give a bad review without firing the weapon first, but I find the quality first rate. You can spend more on other pistols , but why would you. The magazines do rattle some , but it doesn't affect the operation at all. I bought one for my son and we spent the day at the range with no errors at all. Buy this pistol with the confidence that you bet your life on it , with no regrets. (Posted on 4/3/2016)
Very short rails, sloppy slide, and magazines that rattle like a can of bolts. Junk. Review by mw
Quality
Price

I often wonder what people's backgrounds and experience are when I read reviews, because this gun is crap. I didn't even shoot it yet, and I know it's crap. The rails are only two ~1/4" long tabs on either side of the slide and the slide is extremely loose, so loose that it rattles. I have four mags, two come with the pistol and two that I bought from S&W. All four sound like a can of bolts when they're loaded. It's total garbage, don't buy it. I originally bought a Springfield XD40 over and S&W SD because the slide was so loose, the SD-VE is no different. The only reason I bought this was the sale price of $300, if I could return it I would.

Save your money and get a Springfield XD or a S&W M&P. (Posted on 3/27/2016)

I have had it for about a month now and have fired between 500-600 rounds through it with zero errors. I have used four different brands of ammo(american eagle, lawman, hornady, and one more I can't remember) with no issues. It doesn't feel like a cheap pistol. It has a very heavy trigger pull and the recoil is pretty hard compared to other .40 and .45 that I have fired but it just took a little getting used to.When the 2 included mags get more than 12 rounds in them they get this rattle when you shake them but they have had no issues feeding them. I plan on buying the 9mm version as well. (Posted on 1/5/2016)
Excellent Pistol For Concealed Carry or Home Defense! Review by AnthemBassMan

I've owned my SD40VE for two years now. This pistol is a winner from Smith & Wesson. While it's not made for extreme duty use like the M&P, it is far from a cheap, flimsy pistol. I carry my SD as my CCW and have absolutely no reservations about being able to protect myself or my family with it. A good IWB holster makes this pistol all but disappear.

The trigger pull is a little on the heavy side, but it is far from terrible. Mine weighed at 8lbs 9oz after shooting it for a year. Earlier this year I installed the Apex spring kit and did a minor polishing to the trigger bar assembly. Now the pull is sitting at 6lbs 1oz without any misfires.

The only other upgrade I may do is the sights. I'm looking into fiber optic sights because my eyes are aging and the typical three dot sights are getting harder for me to pick up quickly.

Do yourself a favor and give this pistol series a good look. If you know someone who owns one, or know of a range who rents one, grab it and put some rounds through it. It may just win you over. (Posted on 12/27/2015)
